Dance

Dance is a powerful and expressive subject which encourages students to develop their creative, physical, emotional and intellectual capacity.

With the Ash Manor Core Values of community, excellence, integrity, respect and resilience embedded within the teaching and learning of Performing Arts, and our students are given the opportunity to develop their own aspirations as performers through an engaging and varied curriculum.

Key Stage 3 Curriculum information
In Year 9 students can opt to specialise in Dance with 100 minutes of learning a week, students will build the foundation of vital skills and techniques that are required for the study of GCSE. This will include performance, choreographic and critical analyse skills of their own and professional Dance performances.

Key Stage 4 Curriculum information
At KS4 our Dance students follow the AQA GCSE Dance syllabus (1-9). This course provides an accessible platform for students to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills in Dance. Student will study the three core areas of dance: performance, choreography and appreciation exploring a mix of artistic, cultural and aesthetically diverse works throughout the course.
 
Component 1: Performance and Choreography
Internally marked and externally moderated 60% of GCSE

  • Performance
  • Set phrases through a solo performance (approximately one minute in duration)
  • Duet/trio performance (three minutes in a dance which is a maximum of five minutes in duration)
  • Choreography
  • Solo or group choreography – a solo (two to two and a half minutes) or a group dance for two to five dancers (three to three and a half minutes)
 
Component 2: Appreciation of Dance
  • 1 hour 30 min Written Paper
  • Knowledge and understanding of choreographic processes and performing skills
  • Critical appreciation of own work
  • Critical appreciation of professional work
