English as an Additional Language (EAL)
What is EAL?
Students with EAL are students who speak English as an additional language to their home language.
Students with EAL may be fluent in English, not speak English at all or have a level of English anywhere in between.
How do we support students with EAL at Ash Manor School?
At Ash Manor School, our aim is to ensure all students are able to access the curriculum and achieve their full potential.
In lessons, students with EAL have access to a device that helps them translate unfamiliar words. Teachers also use a range of strategies to support students when required. This includes: providing key word and definition lists; a focus on oracy; resources provided ahead of lessons for pre-reading and more.
Students who struggle to access the curriculum due to their proficiency in English receive additional EAL lessons. In these lessons, students follow an intensive English language programme designed to target individual needs. This intervention ensures students with EAL are able to access material taught in their timetabled lessons and apply what they learn in everyday interactions.
Through time spent with the EAL coordinator, individual strategies are recognised and shared with wider class teachers to best support students in lessons.
