PE Department

 

The department delivers a broad and balance curriculum in both Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 which is set out to give the students at Ash Manor the opportunity to experience a wide variety of activities, catering for all students’ needs. In Key Stage 3 students follow a set programme of study but in Key Stage 4 we offer the students the opportunity to select activities they want to participate in to encourage the independent learner. We also offer Key stage 4 Students GCSE PE as their option choice, where we follow the AQA specification.

The PE team believes that every child can achieve in PE and as a result, lessons are structured to create full involvement of all. The ethos of the Department is ‘Personal Best’ where by every pupil is expected to work at their optimum level in all areas of the curriculum to allow them to make progress both in practical performance and understanding.

To support students learning and enjoyment the department offers a wide variety of extra-curricular sports for both boys and girls ranging from football, netball and basketball to dance, trampolining and rounders. Students who attend sports clubs have the opportunity to represent Ash Manor in fixtures against opposing schools. Students who show potential are directed towards local clubs to further their development as well as being nominated for district, county and high-level club teams.

We have excellent facilities at Ash Manor, including a full size football all weather pitch, access to the Tennis and fitness Centre as well as ample of space both outdoor and indoor activities to fulfil our broad and balance curriculum. We have also created excellent links with local clubs to use their facilities to give our student’s as many opportunities as possible.  

Over the course students will have a variety of classroom based lessons and practical lessons. The student selects three sports, two from either individual or team activities and one from the alternate area. The students will be assessed on their performance in these sports if the replication of skills and the implementation of skills in competition. It is vital that students are taking in sport competitively outside school and in extra-curricular activities. For theory lessons students study a variety of physiological, psychological and sociological elements relating to sport and living a healthy active life style. This will be covered in depth over the period of the course.


Key Stage 3 Curriculum information
Physical Education plays a crucial part in the physical and mental well-being of students at Ash Manor School.
In KS3 students have 100 minutes of PE a week and are given a broad yet balanced curriculum meeting the requirements of the National Curriculum. This offers students the opportunity to experience a variety of different sports.
We offer a wide curriculum in Year 7 and 8 which is then narrowed in Year 9 to allow for more depth of performance and understanding. We focus on “Breadth, Depth and Expertise” This is further supported through extra-curricular clubs and fixtures run throughout the academic year.

Key Stage 4 Curriculum information
Students continue to experience 100 minutes of Physical Education a week to ensure the students at Ash Manor experience knowledge on a healthy active life style. The department deliver a diverse curriculum giving the students the responsibility to select their own curriculum to maximise participation, engagement and enjoyment. We focus on responsibility and independent learning. Students have the opportunity to use the community sports centre, tennis centre and outside sporting venues to ensure we continue to give our students a wide variety and opportunities in a number of sports all based around the National Curriculum.
